AS IT SEEMS
Editor's Note: Ben S. ('17) wonders about the assumptions we make when doing math.
This is a series of visuals exploring the concepts of assumption and surrealism though math. As children, many instantly believe that 1+1=11 because it makes perfect logical sense. But then we are told that 1+1 in fact equals 2. We take this for granted, but who is to really say 1+1 does not equal 11? Facts are only facts because people assume they are so, but when you think about it critically, you realize that 1+1 could just as easily equal 11. The mind of a child is one raw and unfiltered, like that of a dream state or the unconscious mind, and in this pure state, we believe that 1+1=11. Is everything as it seems?
