WHEN EBOLA IS CURED BUT NOT OVER
Editor's Note: Abby W. ('18) wrote this paper on Ebola, for her advanced chemistry class.
In 2014 and 2015, there was a large Ebola outbreak, infecting more then 28,000 people and killing about 11,000 in Guinea, Sierra Leone, and Liberia. Many doctors went to West Africa to help treat patients. One of the doctors being Dr. Ian Crozier, an American Doctor who traveled to West Africa and contracted Ebola while he was there. When Dr. Ian Crozier became infected with Ebola he traveled back to America where he was successfully treated; or at least that’s what the doctors thought. Less then two months later he noticed a loss of eyesight, intense pain in his eye, and a discoloration of his left eye. Doctors were both amazed and confused by this finding, and after many tests doctors found that the virus had invaded his eye, doctors also concluded that the virus in Dr. Ian Croziers eye didn’t pose a threat to anyone he was near. Doctors back in West Africa were also noticing similar symptoms in other Ebola survivors who had been cured months before. This posed many concerns about how the lasting effects of Ebola and how they will be taken care of in West Africa. Scientists and doctors are still looking for ways to treat the symptoms, which present in Ebola survivors.
The things that fascinated me the most in science is anything, which is medical related, which is why I knew I wanted to read an article, which was about medicine. I found this article about Ebola and the lasting effects on it and knew I wanted to read it. This story interested me because I remember Ebola being something which frightened many people last year, especially when it came to New York, and because of this I wanted to learn more about the virus. When the Ebola virus came to New York I remember many people being very worried about it spreading throughout America and because of that people became very aware of this virus, but after the initial scare of Ebola people became less interested in it. I never quite understood the severity of this virus until I read this article and discovered how it could affect you for many years or even entire life, even after you have been “cured.” I also found it intriguing that the doctors didn’t know how to treat the side effects of Ebola and how they trying to find a answer to treating the side effects of Ebola.
This is very important for other people to read because there are still so many people who are suffering from this virus; many people have been left with little to no eyesight or hearing, problems walking and joint pain. I think that when the scare of Ebola in America was over people forgot about it, so it is very important for people to know what is still happening with Ebola and finding ways to help. One way that the article mentions is that doctors in West Africa are hoping that ophthalmology, rheumatology, and rehabilitation medicine would visit West Africa to help find cures for survivors. This article also shows that even though science has come a long way there are still many unanswered questions which scientist are searching for and this is just one example.
